Mens Socks: Pantharella

Mens Hosiery – Tradition and Fashion

Men’s fashion micro trend: “the Statement sock”

It’s time to wear socks again… Traditions suggests you wear a sock that is a little darker than your trouser. There are many fun patterns, and you can match secondary colors in the sock to your shirt, tie or pocket square.

Fashion says there’s absolutely a place in men’s style for colored socks that do not match the trousers. It requires a little more care, because it’s not a simple, neutral choice, but if you take that care it can look great.

“Statement socks are like a stylish man’s best kept secret.” GQ.  This secret is getting out and has played a major part in increasing money spent on men’s clothing this past year.

Pantherella is one of our favorite brand of “fun” socks:

Columbia’s Father’s Day Store for Men

Excellent Gifts For Father’s Day

Whether he’s your biological father, or the man who raised you, the dad in your life is undoubtedly a special human being. Even though father figures seem to have it all, their hearts tend to melt whenever their children shower them with thoughtful gifts. If you haven’t seen your father for quite sometime and wants to make a surprise visit, you may be in dilemma picking gifts. Is he slimmer or has he added a few pounds? Will this coat fit? Will this beautiful suit look flabby on him? All those are valid questions, and the most ideal thing to do is to buy gifts where size doesn’t matter. For such cases, the following will prove to be excellent gifts for Father’s Day:

Classic Men’s Watch

Regardless of the fact that there are many other devices that help one keep track of time, watches will always remain valid. Watches have been a man’s number 1 wardrobe essential since their invention and this won’t change anytime soon. When thinking of it as a Father’s Day gift, you need to pick the best brand on the market. Daniel Wellington watches perfectly fit that description as they are created with the notion of style in mind.

DANIEL WELLINGTON WATCHES

Besides featuring timeless designs, Daniel Wellington watches are made to last. The classic petite design allows you to choose from 9 interchangeable straps that feature elegant mesh and genuine leather in different vibrant colors.

Working Man’s Wallet

Every man has a wallet, that’s a fact. Regardless of whether your father has one or several, adding a wallet to his collection will be very thoughtful. For this special day, you don’t need just any wallet, but you need one that will make a statement. Working Man’s Wallets have the reputation for being highly durable, versatile and convenient.

WORKING MANS WALLTET

This Working Man’s wallet is made of oiled cowhide leather that’s durable enough to last a decade or more. It comes with 8 credit card slots plus 2 side-entry slots. All these slots will not only give your father ample room to keep all his credit and business cards, but they will also serve as the safest place for him to keep his money.

Dopp Kit

Staying organized on the road is crucial.  A Dopp kit is basically a toiletry bag that enables a traveler carry his personal effects effectively and safely. Osgoode Marley makes exceptional Dopp kits to ensure that users carry all their essential items in one safe and convenient bag.

Eco-Friendly Down That Actually Keeps You Warm

Gentlemen, let us introduce you to a new line we are now carrying called Save the Duck.

duck

Gentleman, Duck; Duck, Gentlemen.

Save the Duck is a new line of outerwear for guys who love the warmth and lightness of down but are conscious of their use of animal products.

Save the Duck has engineered what they call (and by “call” we mean “trademarked”) “plumtech,” a synthetic insulation that functions like real down. It’s just as fluffy, lightweight and, most importantly, warm. But since it isn’t real down, it dries fast and cleans easily. It’s also amphibian-friendly.

The more affordable sticker price will make you feel a little more warm and fuzzy too, FYI.

So, Save the Duck offers the best of both worlds—synthetic and real down—and is a must-have addition to your fall wardrobe.

But really, technology like this needs to be seen to be believed, so we invite you to come into Binghams today and see the cutting-edge technology for yourself.

We carry Save the Duck’s quilted jackets and vests in several different colors, and their heat-sealed seam rain jacket.

Save the Duck quilted jackets in navy, red and brown.

How a Suit Should Fit

Nailing the fit of a suit is the most important aspect of suiting. Even if mermaids spun the fabric from gold, your suit will look like nothing more than a pricey garbage bag if it doesn’t fit right. So, to ensure your next suit fits like a glove, we’ve compiled this part-by-part set of guidelines:

The shoulder

The shoulder of your jacket should lie flat—no creases, divots or bumps. Here’s a tip: The shoulder will lie flat when the seam of the sleeve meets the seam of the jacket at exactly the spot where your arm meets your shoulder.

The waist/button closure

The sides of your jacket should contour cleanly to your torso. If there are too many folds or it makes a straight line from your armpit to the hem, it’s too big. Conversely, if the fabric pulls from the buttons when it’s closed, or you can’t raise your arms for fear of ripping a seam, it’s too tight. Also, it’s worth noting that a more tailored waist creates a more dramatic V shape, which will make your shoulders look broader.

The seat

No saggy bottoms or underwear lines, guys. The fabric should drape over your derriere and touch your underwear, but passers-by should not be able to tell if you’re wearing boxers or briefs. Also, there should be no major creases (horizontal, under the butt = too tight, vertical-ish on the backs of the thighs = too big).

The arms/sleeve length

Your sleeves should end just above the hinges of your wrists. You’ll know you got it right when a quarter to half inch of shirt cuff shows under your suit jacket. Bonus: this is also a trick to make your arms look longer.

Jacket length

Attention, short guys: longer jackets don’t make you look taller. In fact, not only does a long jacket not add inches, it actually makes your legs look shorter. To ensure your jacket is the right length, place your hands at your sides. If the middle of your palm matches up with the hem of the jacket, it’s the right length.

Pant break

Nothing makes a suit look sloppier than pants that are too big. You can tell pants are oversized by the break (where the hem meets the top of your shoe). If deep folds are piled high above your shoe, they are too big. Ideally, you want the pant hem to just touch the top of your shoe, exposing most of the laces.

***If you’re a visual learner, here are excellent graphics from The Art of Manliness that show not only how a suit should fit, but also how it shouldn’t: How Should a Suit Fit? Your Easy-to-Follow Visual Guide.***

Of course, there is no better way to achieve a perfect fit than an in-person consultation at Binghams. Our tailor can make you taller, thinner and better looking in just a few stitches.

What Your Hat Says About You

Hats should be worn for more than just bad hair days. Yes, they are practical in that way, and we love a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap as much as the next guy in Columbia, Mo. However, we also know how much a hat or cap can say about a man (aside from his favorite sports team). For the guy who likes to make a fashion statement, here are the messages a few of our favorite hats and caps can send:

The panama

The panama is the classic summer hat. What it says: “I’m at the beach…in my mind.”

The newsboy

Most newsboy caps nowadays are a cross between a flat cap and the classic newsboy, which has a rounder, fuller shape and a button in the center (cheers to you if you can pull off the traditional version). What a newsboy cap says: “Sophisticated. Trendy but a little irreverent.”

A casual fedora

Fedora’s come in various shapes and sizes, but the crown is always creased lengthwise. It is usually made of felt, but casual fedoras come in a variety of materials. What a casual fedora says: “Classy like Frank Sinatra, cool like Dean Moriarty.”

Hats are not for every guy, we know. But if there is ever a time to try one out, it’s summer. The vibe is more relaxed, so you’ll feel more confident wearing something on your head.

Come into Binghams today and sample our selection of summer chapeaux. And don’t worry, we will be brutally honest if you can’t pull off a particular hat (and then we will promptly find you one you look awesome in).

We are located here.

Everything You Need to Know About Pocket Squares

A pocket square is the ultimate sign of a well-dressed man. The simple-yet-powerful accessory has been back in form for several years now, though truthfully, we here at Binghams in Columbia, Mo., feel they never left. Because more customers have been asking us about pocket squares, here is a crash course in everything you need to know about pocket squares.

1. It doesn’t always have to be white.

Hardly. In fact, it’s better if it’s patterned.

2. Nor does it have to match your tie (or bow tie).

There is no scientific formula for pairing a pocket square. If it complements your outfit, and is folded properly, you’re good to go. A helpful way to think of complementing is as “echoing.” For example, if your tie or shirt has subtle blue threads in it, try a white pocket square with blue edges. In this case, the blue-trimmed pocket square echoes the blue hue in the shirt and tie.

3. A pocket square can be worn alone.

Pocket squares are traditionally worn with a tie, but it’s 2015 and style rules are laxer than ever. We fully support wearing a pocket square sans tie. It’s a debonair yet raffish look, and perfect for an office dress code that doesn’t demand a full suit and tie.

4. There are many ways to fold a pocket square.

How you fold your pocket square depends on the look you’re going for. Here are links to helpful tutorials for the most popular folds (thank you to The Rules of Style’s Youtube channel):

Fold #1: Classic (or Straight)
Fold #2: Pyramid
Fold #3: One Point
Fold #4: The Poof

And remember: just relax. It’s not origami. It’s okay to spend a few minutes fussing with it in front of the mirror.

5. Overall, don’t over think it.

It’s just a pocket square—not rocket science.

We have a wide selection of pocket squares here at Binghams, so come in and see us. We carry Robert Talbott, R. Hanauer and more.

We are located here.
