How a Suit Should Fit

Nailing the fit of a suit is the most important aspect of suiting. Even if mermaids spun the fabric from gold, your suit will look like nothing more than a pricey garbage bag if it doesn’t fit right. So, to ensure your next suit fits like a glove, we’ve compiled this part-by-part set of guidelines:

The shoulder

The shoulder of your jacket should lie flat—no creases, divots or bumps. Here’s a tip: The shoulder will lie flat when the seam of the sleeve meets the seam of the jacket at exactly the spot where your arm meets your shoulder.

The waist/button closure

The sides of your jacket should contour cleanly to your torso. If there are too many folds or it makes a straight line from your armpit to the hem, it’s too big. Conversely, if the fabric pulls from the buttons when it’s closed, or you can’t raise your arms for fear of ripping a seam, it’s too tight. Also, it’s worth noting that a more tailored waist creates a more dramatic V shape, which will make your shoulders look broader.

The seat

No saggy bottoms or underwear lines, guys. The fabric should drape over your derriere and touch your underwear, but passers-by should not be able to tell if you’re wearing boxers or briefs. Also, there should be no major creases (horizontal, under the butt = too tight, vertical-ish on the backs of the thighs = too big).

The arms/sleeve length

Your sleeves should end just above the hinges of your wrists. You’ll know you got it right when a quarter to half inch of shirt cuff shows under your suit jacket. Bonus: this is also a trick to make your arms look longer.

Jacket length

Attention, short guys: longer jackets don’t make you look taller. In fact, not only does a long jacket not add inches, it actually makes your legs look shorter. To ensure your jacket is the right length, place your hands at your sides. If the middle of your palm matches up with the hem of the jacket, it’s the right length.

Pant break

Nothing makes a suit look sloppier than pants that are too big. You can tell pants are oversized by the break (where the hem meets the top of your shoe). If deep folds are piled high above your shoe, they are too big. Ideally, you want the pant hem to just touch the top of your shoe, exposing most of the laces.

***If you’re a visual learner, here are excellent graphics from The Art of Manliness that show not only how a suit should fit, but also how it shouldn’t: How Should a Suit Fit? Your Easy-to-Follow Visual Guide.***

Binghams is Your One-Stop Shop for Robert Graham

We are proud to say that Binghams carries the best selection of Robert Graham in Columbia, Mo. We don’t just have a lot of product—we have our very own Robert Graham shop right here within our store. We carrying everything from the American designer’s famous contrast cuff shirt to his fashion-forward socks.

Robert Graham 2

The brand’s colorful story began in 2001, when founder Robert Stock decided it was time menswear appealed to guys who wanted more expressive, interesting pieces. His first step to meeting this demand was revamping the contrast-collar dress shirt. Instead of having the contrasting colors only be different neutrals, Stock used bold patterns and bright colors. He embroidered cuffs, used ribbon stitching on collars and infused pops of colors on every shirt.

Robert Graham short sleeve knit shirts. Fun fact: Country music superstar Sam Hunt paid us a visit a few weeks back and bought one of these shirts. He looked pretty good too, in our opinion.

“Robert Graham is great for the guy who doesn’t just do the standard white, black and navy,” says Dave Danuser, owner of Binghams. “It is also great for summer. Bright, loud colors–especially blue–are a really popular trend this season, so Robert Graham is a great, sophisticated way to wear them.”

We love our Robert Graham shop and know you will too. Come in today and see it.

Southern Tide Independence Day tee and apparel

Show Your Patriotism in Style with Southern Tide

You wouldn’t think that as a specialty menswear store we’d be all that crazy about t-shirts. But, in fact, we love them. Especially now that it’s summer in Columbia, Mo. and Fourth of July is around the corner, t-shirts are a must-have item.

However, not all tees are created equal. Southern Tide, a South Carolina-based brand of preppy but relaxed beachwear, is our t-shirt of choice. Southern Tide’s tees are better quality than most, so while their tees are made for summer, they’ll last well beyond one season.

With Fourth of July fast approaching, we are proudly carrying Southern Tide’s Skipjack Independence Day T-Shirt. We have them in three fitting colors: red, white and blue.

Binghams is Your Source for Bills Khakis in Columbia, Mo.

If you’re looking for khaki pants, Bills Khakis is the brand you should buy. They are high quality, comfortable and affordable. They are also something of an American tradition, with a story as American as apple pie.

Back in 1984, in an Army surplus store in Ohio, a college student named Bill Thomas came across a pair of original WWII khakis. Thomas was instantly enamored with his newfound treasure. “They were made from better cloth, the pockets were deep, the pocketing was made of drill cloth, everything about it was better,” recalls Thomas in this video. “That pair of khakis turned out to be the best pair of khakis that I’d ever found,” he says.

Thomas was so inspired by those pants that he started his own line of khakis, and in 1990, in Reading, Penn., Bills Khakis was born.

All of Bills’ khakis—and the apparel they added in 2007—are made in in the U.S. This makes sense, given the brand’s mission to pay homage to the American ideal of hard work and the country’s industrial history.

And a man doesn’t just feel patriotic when buying a pair of Bills. He also feels sensible, given the brand’s top-notch quality. You can feel the durability in a pair of Bills in its stitching, the slight heft of the fabric, and the way it feels on the skin.

Bills Khakis are definitely a comfort fit, and a little looser than most pants you find these days. This doesn’t mean, however, that Bills has ignored the widespread skinny trend. They just incorporated it in a way that did not alter their core product.

In 2014, they launched Tea Label, a collection of slimmer fitting apparel geared toward the younger, trend-conscious customer.

“Men who buy Bills Khakis do so because of the fit. They know what they want, which is comfort and quality,” explains Dave Danuser, owner of Binghams. “I think having the separate collection shows Bills commitment to not changing a good a thing, and to their core customers.”

And, as much as we love trends here at Binghams, we equally admire a clothing brand that sticks to what it does best, regardless of fads.

See for yourself what has made Bills Khakis a lasting American brand by coming into Binghams today and trying on a pair of their excellent khakis. We are located here and look forward to seeing you.

What Your Hat Says About You

Hats should be worn for more than just bad hair days. Yes, they are practical in that way, and we love a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap as much as the next guy in Columbia, Mo. However, we also know how much a hat or cap can say about a man (aside from his favorite sports team). For the guy who likes to make a fashion statement, here are the messages a few of our favorite hats and caps can send:

The panama

The panama is the classic summer hat. What it says: “I’m at the beach…in my mind.”

The newsboy

Most newsboy caps nowadays are a cross between a flat cap and the classic newsboy, which has a rounder, fuller shape and a button in the center (cheers to you if you can pull off the traditional version). What a newsboy cap says: “Sophisticated. Trendy but a little irreverent.”

A casual fedora

Fedora’s come in various shapes and sizes, but the crown is always creased lengthwise. It is usually made of felt, but casual fedoras come in a variety of materials. What a casual fedora says: “Classy like Frank Sinatra, cool like Dean Moriarty.”

Hats are not for every guy, we know. But if there is ever a time to try one out, it’s summer. The vibe is more relaxed, so you’ll feel more confident wearing something on your head.

Come into Binghams today and sample our selection of summer chapeaux. And don’t worry, we will be brutally honest if you can’t pull off a particular hat (and then we will promptly find you one you look awesome in).

Short-sleeve dress shirts by Stone Rose

Keep Cool and Stylish with Short-Sleeve, Woven Shirts

T-shirts are popular warm-weather attire, but a cotton tee can sometimes be too casual for guys who enjoy getting dressed. Thankfully, there is a happy medium between a button-down work shirt and your favorite St. Louis Cardinal’s tee: the woven short-sleeve shirt.

It’s dressier than a tee, but still decidedly laid-back. The woven fabric provides that bit of heft necessary to feel like you’re a bit more dressed up, but the short sleeves keep it from looking like you’re going to work.

A short-sleeved woven shirt, like one by Robert Graham or Stone Rose (we carry both), is perfect for a weekend barbecue, strolling in downtown Columbia, or an afternoon lunch on a patio.

“Now that spring is here, guys should have short-sleeve dress shirts in their closets. They’re great because you can wear them off the clock, but you can also add a tie or bow tie and be ready to go for work on Monday,” says Dave Danuser, co-owner of Binghams.

They are also exceedingly cool. Just ask white-hot country music star, Sam Hunt, who stopped in our store and purchased a Robert Graham short-sleeve dress shirt:

Everything You Need to Know About Pocket Squares

A pocket square is the ultimate sign of a well-dressed man. The simple-yet-powerful accessory has been back in form for several years now, though truthfully, we here at Binghams in Columbia, Mo., feel they never left. Because more customers have been asking us about pocket squares, here is a crash course in everything you need to know about pocket squares.

1. It doesn’t always have to be white.

Hardly. In fact, it’s better if it’s patterned.

2. Nor does it have to match your tie (or bow tie).

There is no scientific formula for pairing a pocket square. If it complements your outfit, and is folded properly, you’re good to go. A helpful way to think of complementing is as “echoing.” For example, if your tie or shirt has subtle blue threads in it, try a white pocket square with blue edges. In this case, the blue-trimmed pocket square echoes the blue hue in the shirt and tie.

3. A pocket square can be worn alone.

Pocket squares are traditionally worn with a tie, but it’s 2015 and style rules are laxer than ever. We fully support wearing a pocket square sans tie. It’s a debonair yet raffish look, and perfect for an office dress code that doesn’t demand a full suit and tie.

4. There are many ways to fold a pocket square.

How you fold your pocket square depends on the look you’re going for. Here are links to helpful tutorials for the most popular folds (thank you to The Rules of Style’s Youtube channel):

Fold #1: Classic (or Straight)
Fold #2: Pyramid
Fold #3: One Point
Fold #4: The Poof

And remember: just relax. It’s not origami. It’s okay to spend a few minutes fussing with it in front of the mirror.

5. Overall, don’t over think it.

It’s just a pocket square—not rocket science.

We have a wide selection of pocket squares here at Binghams, so come in and see us. We carry Robert Talbott, R. Hanauer and more.

We are located here.
